Dave Berry’s High Sierra Reverie

High Sierra Reverie is ostensibly a documentary, first about the High Sierra mountains of California, secondly about one man’s life long love of wilderness, specifically the High Sierra. Whatever my ambitions were when I began the project in 1997, it veered somewhat off course into the realm of visual poetry and abstraction, with admittedly mixed results. Viewing the film reminds me of what a great trip it was! -Dave Berry

I finished this little video with Phil Arnot in 1995. It was filmed in Hi8, with a little Sony Handycam. It was edited old school, linear. It was sold in VHS format at the gift shop at the Visitor’s Center in Bear Valley, and in various other stores mainly in Inverness. Only a few thousand copies were made, but eventually, the film broke even, barely. It’s awkward but well-intentioned, and I had a good time hiking all over the park with Phil Arnot! -Dave Berry
